INTRODUCING TRANSPOGOOD

To overcome the multiple existing barriers hindering efficient intermodal and multimodal transport in the Italy-Croatia area , this initiative utilizes innovative ICT tools to optimize cross-border logistics.

Originally co-funded by the ERDF through the INTERREG Italy-Croatia 2014-2020 Programme, the initial 18-month TRANSPOGOOD project launched in January 2018 with a budget of €1,170,990.00. It capitalized on the INTERMODADRIA IPA project to successfully build the foundational TRANSPOGOOD Platform and its innovative logistics services.

Building directly on those results , the cross-border partnership has launched TRANSPONEXT (“Next chapter in the Transport of Goods”) under the Interreg VI-A Italy-Croatia Programme. This 30-month continuation project expands a strong public-private consortium of 8 partners with a total eligible budget of €2,706,280.70.

While the first phase established routing options for maritime lines , TRANSPONEXT upgrades the platform by integrating railway connections and developing an efficient e-booking system. The project delivers a comprehensive cross-border strategy alongside four innovative digital solutions across Italian and Croatian nodes:

  • A fully innovative wagon pooling solution in the Port of Trieste;
  • The digitalization of railway processes and procedures in the Port of Ploče;
  • An ICT Cargo Port Reservation System (CPRS) in the Port of Zadar;
  • An Intermodal Transportation Unit (ITU) Tracking system in the Abruzzo region;

Through these combined actions, the platform evolves into a holistic Decision Support System , driving a sustainable modal shift from road to rail and sea, and actively reducing the transport sector’s environmental footprint.

HOW TO BENEFIT FROM THE PROJECT

If you are involved in policy-making, or if you are among transport operators, freight forwarders, logistics providers, or SMEs looking to adopt intermodal and multimodal transport to scale your business—but find that cross-border cooperation and information exchange remain overly fragmented and complex—we can help you.

The enhanced TRANSPOGOOD platform and its TRANSPONEXT upgrades deliver an ecosystem of innovative ICT tools, real-time data integration, and specialized training frameworks. By utilizing these open-access solutions, you can optimize routing choices across rail and maritime lines, streamline berth and rolling stock bookings, automate cargo tracking, and significantly minimize your environmental footprint while driving greater supply chain visibility across the Italy-Croatia corridor.

WHAT WE DO

The project enables key logistics stakeholders (shippers, logistics providers, transport operators, and authorities) by developing, testing, and keeping available the following digital products and services on our active platform:

  • The Enhanced TRANSPOGOOD Platform: (ScanRail DSS): Operating as an innovative cross-border Decision Support System, the platform resolves data fragmentation by offering an interactive, single-node portal for freight rail users. Building on its original maritime routing, profile calculators, and environmental monitoring features, it now integrates a comprehensive dataset of nearly 150 rail options and an interactive e-booking system. Users can instantly execute queries to compare and rank transport options across Italy and Croatia using automated KPIs like real-time transit times, distances, operational schedules, and emission standards.
  • Integrated Node & Port Digital Modules: The platform’s ecosystem is extended through four specialized regional solutions, seamlessly feeding data directly into the TRANSPOGOOD interface to enhance end-to-end supply chain visibility:
  • Wagon Pooling Module (Trieste Hub): A cloud-based platform interoperable with the Port Community System (PCS) that introduces a “sharing economy” model for short-term rolling stock chartering. Utilizing REST WebServices and GPS tracking, it provides real-time fleet inventory visibility, calendar-based booking, and an automated repair-shop workflow to slash wagon idle times and reduce port infrastructure congestion.
  • Rail Digitalization Module (Ploče Hub): An upgraded PCS railway module deploying digital remote code-scanning cameras and sensors to eliminate manual tracking barriers. This system optimizes freight flows through automated container passage logging and real-time cargo tracking data paired with integration interfaces.
  • Cargo Port Reservation System / CPRS (Zadar Hub): A secure web/cloud platform that digitalizes and centralizes berth reservations and arrival/departure scheduling for cargo vessels. Fully integrated with the Croatian Integrated Maritime Information System (CIMIS), it replaces manual email workflows with an API data feed of ship announcements, enabling automated data export, capacity checks, and smooth concession management.
  • ITU Tracking System (Abruzzo Compound): A cloud platform driven by Java/Spring Boot microservices and hardware tracking devices (beacons/gateways) designed to monitor Intermodal Transport Units (ITUs). Integrated via an Iframe, it syncs real-time container status changes – from rail arrival and shunting to final road collection – drastically improving Ready-to-Pickup (RtP) estimations.
